Job Summary
The Phlebotomist V is a senior-level role responsible for performing advanced phlebotomy procedures, specimen processing, troubleshooting operational issues, training staff, and supporting workflow improvements. The position requires extensive experience in patient care, specimen handling, and laboratory operations while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and specimen collection using straight and butterfly needles.
- Collect, label, process, centrifuge, split, freeze, and package specimens according to established procedures.
- Verify laboratory requisitions and ensure specimen labeling accuracy.
- Maintain specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, and transportation.
- Update and maintain patient demographic and medical information.
- Record maintenance data and perform equipment decontamination procedures.
- Clearly explain specimen collection procedures to patients and address questions professionally.
- Review physician orders to ensure proper specimen collection and testing requirements.
- Respond to laboratory inquiries and communicate relevant information as appropriate.
- Assist with troubleshooting, workflow optimization, and training of laboratory staff.
- Adhere to OSHA, DEP, and laboratory safety regulations.
- Participate in annual departmental training and compliance programs.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Phlebotomy Certification (where required by state regulations).
- Minimum 10+ years of phlebotomy experience.
- At least 6 months of recent experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Strong specimen processing and handling experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and patient care skills.
