Job Description

Position Title: Phlebotomist II
Work Location: NY - New Hartford - 28 Campion Road is home base, floating position (but we will do whatever site is closest to their home as their home base). 8 sites. 2 in Rome NY, 2 in New Hartford, 2 in Utica, 1 in Ilion and 1 in Barneveld (all within 30 minutes from 28 Campion Road location)

Orientation and training: Could be in New Hartford or Rome (we try to keep them close to where they live but it depends on where we have staff and an extra computer)
Assignment Duration: 3+ Months
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 5:45a-6p (8hrs Varied), Rotating Saturdays 615a-12p (3.5-4hrs Varied)
Work Arrangement: Onsite


Position Summary

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing a variety of assigned duties including specimen collection, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations in a fast-paced clinical environment.


Background & Context

We are looking for at least two years of Phlebotomy experience. Their main duties are drawing blood and processing. They will be floating so they must have a reliable vehicle, a valid drivers license, and a good driving record (MVR). They must be able to draw on all age groups including pediatrics.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance data.
  • Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Review and understand physicians' orders thoroughly.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes accurately.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify all test requisitions and labels for 100% accuracy.
  • Package and prepare specimens for transport.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by following temperature and handling protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Participate in annual department training sessions.
  • Handle incoming calls and provide laboratory results as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state).
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • 2–4 years of overall experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of blood draw experience.
  • Experience with both pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Additional Information

  • Full-time: 40 hours/week (8 hours/day).
  • Daily workload: Depending on site, busiest site is 40 patients draw
  • Required vaccinations: MMR, Tb, Hep B, candidate can decline Hep b series. Color vision required.
  • · How many draws are required daily? Depends on the location – busiest sites can see 60-80 patients a day

    · What is the work environment? (Patient service center, doctor’s office) 7 PSC’s, 1 doctor’s office

    · If this is a patient service center, how big is the location? Various locations

    · How long is the worker expected to stand? Majority of their shift – 30-minute lunch break

    · Are there any specialties? (Pediatric, geriatric) Pediatric through geriatric

    · Will this person work with a team or alone? Alone at times, and alongside employees at times

    · How many weeks of training is required at the start of this role? Frist week or two is orientation or training
