Job Description

Position Title: Phlebotomist II
Work Location: 6101 Woodway Dr, Waco, TX 76712 (IOP – Doctor’s Office)
Assignment Duration: 3-Month


Work Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
1-hour lunch


Position Summary:

The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to perform assigned duties including specimen collection, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements within a physician office (IOP) setting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance data
  • Collect and store specimens following established procedures
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes (blood, urine, fecal, etc.)
  • Demonstrate proficiency with straight and butterfly needles
  • Understand and follow physicians’ orders accurately
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Verify test requisitions or labels against orders for accuracy
  • Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity
  • Store specimens at required temperatures using proper containers
  • Follow protocol-specific procedures for specimen handling and transport
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend required training sessions
  • Handle incoming calls and assist with lab-related inquiries
  • Perform order entry, insurance verification, and possible payment collection
  • Process and ship specimens accurately and efficiently

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 2 years of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab, hospital, or physician office setting
  • Experience performing blood draws on adult patients; pediatric experience preferred
  • Proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles
  • Experience with specimen processing (centrifuging, labeling, handling)
  • Comfortable handling difficult draws (hard sticks)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Majority of the shift involves standing (breaks provided)
  • Medium-sized physician office environment
  • Work alongside a team in a collaborative setting
  • Fast-paced setting with approximately 30 patients per day
  • Initial training includes orientation and onsite training (first 2 weeks)

Additional Information:

  • Full-time: 40 hours/week
  • No travel required (may assist other sites if needed)
  • Pediatric experience preferred but not required
  • Required vaccines: MMR, T-DAP, Varicella, TB, Hep B (declinable), Flu
  • Color vision requirement
  • Contract-to-hire opportunity based on performance
