Position Title: Pathology Assistant I
Work Location: 900 South Caton Ave, Baltimore, MD 21229 (Ascension)
Assignment Duration: 3+ months
Work Schedule: 1st Shift, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday
Position Summary
The Pathology Assistant I is responsible for performing complete dissection, gross description, selection, and submission of tissue for microscopic examination and special studies in accordance with departmental guidelines. This role ensures proper specimen handling, processing, and adherence to laboratory quality control procedures.
Background & Context
This position supports short-staffed coverage in a high-volume clinical laboratory, primarily focused on dermatology biopsies (approximately 80% derm, 20% other OR specimens).
Key Responsibilities
- Perform dissection, gross description, selection, and submission of tissue specimens for microscopic examination.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Adhere to established quality control policies and procedures.
- Assist in other departmental areas and rotations as needed.
- Maintain a professional and compliant laboratory environment.
- Identify and resolve issues affecting test performance or result reporting.
- Uphold high ethical standards and integrity in all assigned duties.
- Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous waste management and safety protocols.
- Follow personal protective measures and bloodborne pathogen guidelines.
- Perform grossing and biopsy work with a primary focus on dermatology specimens.
- Experience with frozen section cutting is preferred.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related science.
- ASCP certification (American Society of Clinical Pathology) highly preferred.
- No experience required with completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathology Assistant program.
- Experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory environment preferred.
- Proficiency with computers; familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus.
- Understanding of quality control and quality assurance processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Knowledge of hazardous waste management and safety procedures.
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 30 lbs.
- Must pass a standardized color vision screening.
- Flexibility to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Standing and walking for the majority of the shift.
- High-volume laboratory environment with a dermatology biopsy focus.
- Color vision screening required.
Additional Information
- Full-time: 40 hours/week (8 hours/day).
- Short-staffed coverage with potential for extension.
- Vaccination requirements: TB, MMR, T-DAP, Flu, Varicella required; Hepatitis B offered upon permanent hire.
