Position Title: Phlebotomist II
Work Location: 810 St. Vincents Drive, Birmingham, AL (IOP – OBGYN)
Assignment Duration: 3+ Months
Work Schedule: 2:00 AM – 10:00 AM, Tuesday – Saturday
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Position Summary
The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing a variety of assigned duties including specimen collection, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Background & Context
This position is for FMLA coverage at a busy OBGYN IOP, handling a high volume of daily patient draws.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance data.
- Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
- Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
- Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Review and understand physicians' orders thoroughly.
- Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes accurately.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions and labels for 100% accuracy.
- Package and prepare specimens for transport.
- Maintain specimen integrity by following temperature and handling protocols.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Participate in annual department training sessions.
- Handle incoming calls and provide laboratory results as needed.
- Perform 30–50 blood draws daily in an OBGYN IOP setting.
Qualifications & Experience
- Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state).
- Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- 2–4 years of overall experience preferred.
- At least 2 years of blood draw experience.
- Experience with both pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Majority of the shift involves standing and walking.
- Work setting: OBGYN IOP.
- Functioning as the sole phlebotomist on-site.
- 1 week of system training followed by hands-on training.
Additional Information
- Full-time: 40 hours/week (8 hours/day).
- Daily workload: 30–50 blood draws.
- Required vaccinations: Hepatitis B, TB, MMR, T-DAP, Flu, Varicella.
- Color vision screening required.
- Hospital experience preferred.
