Job Description

Job Title: Civil Litigation Defense Attorney – General Liability
Location: CA (Remote)
Duration: 3 Months

Position Overview / Summary:

As an insurance defense attorney in our California office, you will be part of a team providing legal representation to  insureds before courts and arbitration panels in all aspects of litigation. You will investigate and manage cases of low, moderate and complex exposure in civil litigation from the inception of the lawsuit until conclusion through dismissal, settlement or trial. You will be responsible for handling cases involving automobile negligence and general liability matters. You will work with a team of attorneys and adjusters to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible.


 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle a moderate caseload consisting of low to complex exposure in automobile negligence and general liability matters
  • Meet with claims professionals to resolve cases in the most cost-effective manner
  • Answer and develop theories and defenses to incoming lawsuits
  • Engage in routine motion practice, discovery, and legal research
  • Handle trials and arbitrations
  • Periodically present to claims partners on new developments in the law

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years litigation experience; trial experience a plus
  • Experience in professional liability, employment liability, or complex cases a plus
  • Must have a valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR, and an ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Admitted to the bar and licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned

  • Advocacy: Knowledge and ability to assist, defend, or plead for another
  • Communication: Ability to clearly and precisely exchange ideas and translate legal language into layman’s terms
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to categorize and prioritize work effectively

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Computer literacy, including MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and email/calendar management
  • Ability to work in a team environment with attorneys, adjusters, claims professionals, and support staff
  • Investigative Skills: Ability to carefully track, examine, and analyze evidence
  • Legal Research: Ability to locate and interpret legal sources and draw accurate conclusions
  • Courtroom Skills: Familiarity with courtroom procedures, decorum, and legal protocols
  • Dedication to providing the highest professional service to clients and claims professionals

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Ability to use a personal computer and standard office equipment
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to travel as necessary
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods
  • 25–30% travel within the state for court appearances, depositions, and mediations
