Job Description
Position Title: Phlebotomist II
Work Location: 2400 Belvidere Road, Waukegan, IL
Duration: 3-Month Contract (Potential for Conversion)
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Work Schedule:
- Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Every other Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
OR - Every other Saturday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Position Summary
The Phlebotomist II will perform blood draws, specimen collection, and processing in a patient service setting. This role also includes troubleshooting, training support, and workflow improvement recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles
- Collect, label, centrifuge, split, and store specimens per protocol
- Match laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes accurately
- Explain specimen collection procedures clearly to patients
- Package and prepare specimens for transport while maintaining integrity
- Maintain proper storage conditions for all specimens
- Update patient information and maintain accurate records
- Perform equipment maintenance, decontamination, and record logs
- Follow OSHA and DEP regulations
- Handle patient inquiries and answer calls as needed
- Perform blood draws and specimen processing in an IOP setting
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
- 2–4 years of experience preferred
- Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
Certifications:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state)
Skills & Competencies
- Strong phlebotomy and specimen handling skills
- Ability to perform difficult draws independently
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment
Working Conditions
- Majority of shift spent standing (with 30-minute unpaid break)
- Large IOP setting with a 4-person team
- Initial 2 weeks of training and orientation (nearby location)
Additional Information
- Full-time: 40 hours/week
- Daily volume: 25–30 draws (pediatrics and adults)
- Vaccines required: T-DAP, Varicella, MMR, Flu, TB (Hep B optional)
- Color vision screening required
- FIT test provided
- Strong customer service skills and pediatric experience preferred
