Position Title: Phlebotomist II
Work Location: 7800 US Highway 98 West, Destin, FL
Assignment Duration:3-Month
Work Schedule:
- 06:00 – 14:30 or 08:00 – 17:00
- Monday to Friday
Work Arrangement:
Onsite
Position Summary:
The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to perform assigned duties including blood collection, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Background & Context:
- Backfill for employee leave (LOA/FMLA) at a 115-bed hospital
- Potential for extension or conversion to a permanent role
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and maintain records
- Collect and store specimens per established procedures
- Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients
- Demonstrate proficiency with straight and butterfly needles
- Interpret and follow physician orders accurately
- Match lab requisitions with specimen tubes
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
- Verify all test requisitions for 100% accuracy
- Package and transport specimens appropriately
- Maintain specimen integrity per temperature and protocol requirements
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department training
- Answer calls and communicate lab results as needed
- Perform blood draws and assist with specimen processing and transport
Qualifications & Experience:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by the state)
- Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2–4 years of overall experience preferred
Skills:
- Phlebotomy expertise
- Strong customer service skills
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Comfortable handling difficult draws (“hard sticks”)
Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
- Majority of shift spent standing (30-minute lunch break)
- Hospital inpatient setting (115 beds)
- Team-based work environment
- 1–2 weeks of onsite training/orientation
- May require walking up to 1.6 miles during shifts
Additional Information:
- Full-time: 40 hours/week (8 hours/day)
- Daily blood draws: ~30 (range: 15–35)
- Pediatrics and geriatrics experience required
- Must be comfortable working with children
- Vaccination Requirements:
- Flu (mask required if declined)
- MMR
- T-DAP
- Hep B (can decline)
- TB
- Color vision required
- Strong sense of urgency and computer skills essential
- Plasma experience acceptable; outpatient experience preferred
