Position Summary:
The Medical Lab Scientist II is responsible for performing routine and complex laboratory testing in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory requirements, and quality standards. This role focuses on ensuring specimen integrity, accurate test results, and supporting patient care within a Blood Bank environment.

Background & Context:
This position supports the Blood Bank department at Riverside Hospital, which is currently short-staffed. Weekend coverage is critical to maintain operations, even though the OR is closed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine and complex laboratory testing in compliance with SOPs and regulatory guidelines

• Determine specimen acceptability for testing based on established criteria

• Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation

• Assign blood products, handle emergency release, and manage Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP)

• Document all laboratory work and maintain accurate records per regulatory standards

• Perform and document quality control (QC) and preventive maintenance procedures

• Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents and controls

• Ensure timely and accurate reporting of test results

• Identify technical issues and communicate deviations impacting data integrity

• Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory environment

• Manage testing supplies and replenish inventory as needed

• Assist with specimen processing when required

• Collaborate with team members and contribute to a cohesive work environment

Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field

• Minimum 5+ years of clinical laboratory experience (Blood Bank experience required)

• Florida State Medical Technologist license required

• ASCP or AMT certification (preferred or required)

• Strong knowledge of Blood Bank procedures and testing

• Experience working with laboratory information systems (Cerner preferred)

• Proficiency with computers and lab systems

• Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment

• Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screening

Additional Information:

• Training Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

• Credentialing clearance required prior to start (resume + official transcripts submission)

• Vaccination Requirements:

  • TB required

  • Flu and Hepatitis B offered (can be declined)

  • COVID vaccination preferred (not required)

• Contract with potential for extension or conversion based on performance
