Job Description

Job Title: Regional Field Sciences Research Technician
Duration: 6 months
Location: Des Moines, IA (Base location) with work at Johnston R&D Center and occasional travel across Iowa

Job Summary
The Regional Field Sciences Research Technician supports small plot agricultural research activities as part of the Field Sciences team. The role involves assisting field scientists with trial establishment, field and laboratory data collection, and insect/pathogen rearing while ensuring alignment with technical objectives and company stewardship guidelines. The position is primarily based at the Johnston R&D Center but may require occasional travel to assist scientists at other regional locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing and managing small plot research trials.

  • Support field and laboratory data collection for research activities.

  • Assist with insect and pathogen rearing and collection.

  • Help field scientists execute research programs in alignment with technical and stewardship guidelines.

  • Maintain detailed records of research activities and data collection.

  • Operate agricultural equipment used in crop production and research trials.

  • Perform land preparation, planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, and harvesting activities.

  • Assist in basic mechanical maintenance and servicing of agricultural equipment.

  • Support management of seasonal labor or interns when required.

  • Apply pesticides using backpack or tractor-mounted spray equipment.

  • Work collaboratively with research teams and maintain compliance with safety and stewardship practices.

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and adapt to changing field requirements.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an agriculture-related field.

  • 2–5 years of experience working with Midwestern field crops, particularly corn and soybean.

  • Strong understanding of agronomy and crop production practices.

  • Experience with agricultural equipment such as tractors, tillage tools, irrigation systems, sprayers, and harvesters.

  • Ability to perform basic mechanical maintenance on equipment.

  • Ability to lead and manage seasonal staff or interns.

  • Strong recordkeeping, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work independently and solve practical problems with minimal supervision.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in changing weather conditions.


Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift 20–60 lbs occasionally.

  • Willingness to work evenings or weekends when necessary.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English within a diverse team environment.

  • Commitment to strong safety and stewardship practices.

  • Ability to obtain CDL and pesticide applicator licenses if required.

  • Driving required for the role (occasional travel).
