Role Overview

The Support Lab Engineer for the Safety Team at Clients Lab126 plays a critical role in ensuring product safety through hands-on laboratory analysis and testing of field-returned devices. This position serves as the technical foundation for product safety investigation, combining meticulous documentation practices with advanced analytical testing capabilities to support the broader safety engineering team’s mission of identifying and mitigating product safety risks across Client’s consumer electronics portfolio, including Echo devices, tablets, e-readers, and wearables.


Job description:
Key Responsibilities:
Device Triage & Documentation
  • Receive and process field safety devices returned to Lab126 for analysis
  • Apply established labeling protocols to incoming equipment and samples, including cables, adapters, and devices
  • Capture detailed photographic documentation of devices at various stages of analysis
  • Maintain organized tracking of all devices under investigation
  • Download and extract device logs from hardware and cloud sources
  • Interpret log data to identify anomalies, failure patterns, and relevant diagnostic information
Testing & Analysis
  • Conduct thermal testing and thermal analysis on suspected failure units
  • Perform functional testing to verify device behavior and identify anomalies
  • Execute visual observation and inspection protocols
  • Operate advanced diagnostic equipment including X-ray systems, CT scanners, and Lock-In Thermography (LIT)
  • Use oscilloscopes and digital multimeters for electrical signal analysis and verification
  • Perform component-level soldering for troubleshooting, component swapping, and attaching test leads
  • Support electrical failure analysis investigations
  • Analyze device and cloud logs to correlate hardware failures with software events
Technical Evaluation
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and PCB layouts
  • Navigate complex board designs to identify components and failure points
  • Collaborate with systems safety engineers on root cause investigations
  • Coordinate with third-party failure analysis laboratories for specialized testing and analysis
  • Communicate technical findings and requirements to external lab partners
Documentation & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Create and maintain detailed JIRA tickets documenting investigation findings, test results, and analysis progress
  • Upload relevant photos, test data, logs, and documentation to JIRA for team visibility
  • Interact with safety engineers, reliability teams, product design teams, and failure analysis specialists through JIRA and direct communication
  • Provide regular updates on investigation status and finding
  • Ensure testing procedures meet quality standards and compliance requirements
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper calibration
  • Follow safety protocols and laboratory best practices
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or related technical field
  • Equivalent combination of technical training and hands-on experience may be considered
 Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with laboratory test equipment (oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies)
  • Experience with advanced imaging systems (X-ray, CT scanning preferred)
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and PCB layouts
  • Understanding of thermal analysis principles and methodologies
  • Soldering skills for component-level rework, test lead attachment, and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with system design architecture and failure modes and causes
  • Strong attention to detail for documentation and photography
  • Ability to download, extract, and interpret device logs and cloud data (training provided)
  • Proficiency with JIRA or similar issue tracking systems for technical documentation
  • Comfortable working with third-party laboratories and external partners
