Title: Senior Instructional Designer - Fossil & Solar Technical Training
Duration: 12 months (with potential extension)
Location: Livemore, CA (Hybrid)
Travel: Monthly to quarterly travel to Northern California locations (Auburn, Livermore, Vacaville, Antioch, Oakland); occasional overnight stays required

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Instructional Designer (SID) to lead the design and development of structured technical training programs supporting Fossil and Solar operations. This role will focus on workforce development, operational compliance, and long-term curriculum strategy aligned with enterprise goals.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in technical or skilled trades training environments and has successfully managed multi-year learning programs.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct needs assessments and Front-End Analyses (FEA) to identify training gaps and recommend effective learning solutions.
- Develop structured learning paths and multi-year curriculum maps for technical workforce development.
- Collaborate with Learning Strategists, Instructional Designers, and SMEs to define instructional strategies and assessment frameworks.
- Review and integrate off-the-shelf technical courses into structured technician curricula.
- Guide and mentor Instructional Designers on applying the ADDIE methodology.
- Lead quality assurance (QA) reviews to ensure instructional and compliance standards are met.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, cost estimates, and execution timelines.
- Facilitate project milestones, including Kick-offs, Betas, Pilots, and Train-the-Trainer sessions.
- Track KPIs and training effectiveness metrics; drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Archive materials and complete project close-out documentation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of instructional design experience.
- 2+ years in a leadership, mentoring, or project oversight capacity.
- Demonstrated experience designing technical or trades-based training programs.
- Experience building structured learning paths and multi-year curriculum frameworks.
- Strong project management skills for small-to-mid-sized initiatives.
- Excellent stakeholder communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
- Experience designing apprenticeship or skilled trades programs.
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design or related field.
- Utility industry or industrial operations experience.
- Familiarity with tools such as Questionmark, Author-It, MS Teams, Articulate Storyline, video production, web design tools, and virtual learning platforms.
