Job Title: Greenhouse Technician (Weekend Shift)
Location: Johnston, Iowa
Duration: 11+ Months
Shift: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Schedule: Wednesday–Sunday or Saturday–Wednesday
 
Position Overview
We are seeking a responsible and highly motivated Greenhouse Technician to join the Controlled Environments Team on a weekend-shifted schedule. This role supports daily greenhouse operations at our 4-acre research facility and contributes to advancing agricultural innovation.
The technician will assist with routine greenhouse tasks including plant care, pollination, transplanting, watering, and data collection while maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant work environment. The facility is a smoke-free campus, and candidates should be comfortable working around chemicals used in greenhouse operations.
 
Key Responsibilities

• Perform daily greenhouse plant care activities, including pollination, transplanting, watering, harvesting, and seed management for crops such as corn, soybean, wheat, canola, and other varieties.
• Support experimental procedures and assist with data collection and record maintenance.
• Carry out routine greenhouse sanitation tasks, including disposal of regulated materials and destruction of waste in compliance with safety protocols.
• Maintain a professional, clean, and safe greenhouse environment while following all compliance standards.

 
Qualifications

• Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, entomology, or a related plant science field preferred but not required
  • Alternatively, 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent education will be considered
• Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Adherence to safety and ergonomic guidelines
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude; able to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision
  • Basic computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with the ability to learn proprietary research software
• Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
  • Lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Perform repetitive tasks in a warm, humid greenhouse environment
  • Year-round exposure to pollen
  • Ability to safely work around commonly used greenhouse chemicals
