Position Title: Research Assistant – Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutical Sciences (Chemistry Automation)
Work Location: South San Francisco, CA, 94080
Assignment Duration: 6 Months
Position Summary:
The Research Assistant will join the Chemistry Automation team within Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutical Sciences, supporting early-phase small-molecule drug development through high-throughput, automation-enabled experimentation. This role focuses on the design, execution, analysis, and documentation of synthetic and analytical experiments using advanced robotic platforms and state-of-the-art characterization tools.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design, set up, and execute high-throughput screening (HTS) experiments for reaction optimization, solubility, crystallinity, polymorph, and solid-form screening
• Operate and support robotic and automated laboratory platforms, liquid handlers, and integrated analytical systems
• Prepare samples, reagents, and plates in accordance with established SOPs and safety requirements
• Perform compound characterization using advanced analytical techniques, including XRPD, microscopy, UHPLC/HPLC, MS, and SFC
• Analyze, interpret, and document experimental data in electronic lab notebooks (ELNs)
• Partner with subject matter experts to ensure data quality and reproducibility
• Collaborate with chemists, automation scientists, and analytical experts across functions
• Participate in data reviews, troubleshooting discussions, and continuous process improvement efforts
• Support general laboratory operations, including inventory management, equipment upkeep, and lab organization
Qualification & Experience:
• BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field
• 1–5 years of relevant pharmaceutical, biotech, or chemical research experience
• Experience with laboratory automation and robotic systems
• Familiarity with air-free techniques and glovebox operations
• Working knowledge of chromatographic and analytical methods
• Proficiency with laboratory software, ELNs, and data analysis tools
• Strong attention to detail and data integrity
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
