Job Title: Lab Engineer III
Duration: 12 Months
Location: Sunnyvale, CA 94089
Worksite: Onsite | 5 Days per Week
Objective
Engage an experienced Lab Engineer to support Client's Core Engineering – Reliability Engineering Team. The contractor will contribute to high-impact reliability (REL) testing efforts by designing test setups, conducting sophisticated mechanical and environmental tests, troubleshooting equipment, and ensuring accurate data capture and documentation. This role ensures product reliability standards are met through rigorous testing, analysis, and continuous process improvement.
Scope of Services
Reliability Testing & Execution

Set up and operate advanced REL test equipment including accelerometers, strain gauges, environmental chambers, digital microscopes, and universal testing machines.

Apply sensors and strain gauges to test specimens to ensure accurate data collection and measurement integrity.

Execute high-priority and time-sensitive REL test requests with precision and adherence to SOPs.
Test Fixture & SOP Development

Design and develop fixtures, test setups, and tools to support reliability testing requirements.

Create, maintain, and update standard operating procedures for equipment operation and test processes.

Train technicians and new personnel on equipment handling, safety protocols, and testing workflows.
Troubleshooting & Documentation

Diagnose equipment issues, perform root-cause investigation, and escalate appropriately.

Record test results with detailed analysis, ensuring accuracy, repeatability, and traceability.

Communicate progress, issues, and blockers to the Lab Manager, Lab Engineers, and cross-functional partners.
Cross-functional Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

Partner with engineering and reliability teams to execute test plans and address technical challenges.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize test processes, workflows, and equipment performance.

Track time spent on test activities and provide daily reporting.
Required Experience
-
4–5 years of hands-on experience in reliability testing for consumer electronics.

Strong understanding of DIC, accelerometers, strain gauges, and related test methodologies.

Proficient in operating:

Environmental chambers (heat soak, temp cycling)

Controlled drop towers

High-speed video cameras (Photron/Phantom)

Digital microscopes (Keyence)

Universal Testing Machines (Instron – single & biaxial)

UV chambers (Atlas)
-
Preferred Skills
-
Experience with shock towers (Lansmont)

Electrodynamic vibration tables

Digital Image Correlation (DIC)

Collaborative robot arms (Universal Robotics)
Must-Have Qualifications

4–5 years of REL testing experience in consumer electronics

Expert operation of environmental chambers, UTMs, high-speed cameras, and microscopy systems

Strong understanding of sensor application and data acquisition

Experience developing fixtures, test setups, and SOPs

Strong troubleshooting and technical communication skills
Main Responsibilities

Execute complex REL test procedures across mechanical, environmental, and material-level testing

Troubleshoot test equipment and escalate issues

Document test data, analysis, and results in real time

Collaborate with engineering partners to support product reliability initiatives
