Job Description:
Performs IT functions such as design, analysis, evaluation, testing, debugging and implementation of applications programs supporting company business processes and operations. Analyzes, installs, acquires, modifies and supports operating systems, database or utilities software. Plans, conducts and directs the analysis of business problems to be solved with automated systems. Analyzes, designs, acquires and implements projects for LAN and/or WAN systems. Plans, designs, acquires and implements telecommunications voice/wire systems. At higher job levels, may contribute to the development, testing, evaluation or design of system or infrastructure architecture used throughout the IT solution set.

Job Description:

Plans, conducts and directs the analysis of business problems to be solved with automated systems. Analyzes, designs, acquires and implements projects for LAN and/or WAN systems. Plans, designs, acquires and implements telecommunications voice/wire systems. At higher job levels, may contribute to the development, testing, evaluation or design of system or infrastructure architecture used throughout the IT solution set.
Responsibilities:
- Install, terminate, and test singlemode and multimode fiber optic cables.
- Perform fiber splicing and connectorization.
- Conduct OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) testing and troubleshooting.
- Perform fiber optic cable management and routing.
- Maintain and repair fiber optic networks.
- Document and report on fiber optic installations and maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with other team members and departments to ensure project success.
- Install, terminate, and test copper cables, including Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a.
- Perform copper cable management and routing.
- Conduct copper cable certification testing using tools such as Fluke testers.
- Troubleshoot and repair copper network issues.
- Working under close supervision.
- Taking responsibility for own work and making decisions with limited impact; impact of decisions is readily apparent; errors made typically only impact timeline (i.e., require additional time to correct).
- Using verbal and written communication skills to convey basic, routine factual information about day-to-day activities to others who are fully knowledgeable in the subject area.
- Completing tasks that require multiple steps that must be performed in a specific order, using directions or manuals that accurately document the steps necessary to perform the tasks.
- Using deductive problem solving required to solve moderately complex problems; most problems have defined processes of diagnosis/detection; some limited data analysis may be required.
- Exercising some creativity may be required to troubleshoot technical problems or deal with novel circumstances.
- Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as escalation point from service desk to resolve advanced system and/or application issues by interfacing with users, other IT Engineers, and vendors to resolve issues.
- Collects, troubleshoots, and debugs issues with networks, systems, and/or applications by completing basic root cause analyses, and escalates issues both internally and externally as needed.
- Networks with colleagues within domain of expertise to gain insight, ideas, and connections.
- Manages distractions, prioritizes tasks, and deals with setbacks in a timely manner under direction from more senior personnel.
- Adapts to moderate changes and setbacks in order to manage pressure and meet deadlines.
- Understands the importance of contributions from individuals of varying backgrounds, locations, and cultures.
- Communicates with project lead via email and direct conversation to provide project status updates and information about impending obstacles.
- Completes moderate technical tasks assigned by more senior personnel.
- Regularly discusses issues within and outside of project team to maintain open communication.
- Contributes to technical conversations with tech leads/managers.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g. Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems) OR Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical field (e.g. Business, Humanities, Marketing) and 1+ years IT-relevant experience OR High School diploma or equivalent and 3+ years IT-relevant experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
- Proven experience as a Fiber and Copper Technician or similar role.
- Proficiency in using fiber optic and copper testing equipment, such as OTDRs, power meters, and Fluke testers.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic and copper cable types, connectors, and splicing techniques.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in various environments, including indoor and outdoor settings.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Able to Lift up to 50LBS
- No issues, limitations or fears of working on ladder or lifts
- Frequently transports between offices, buildings, and campuses up to 5 miles.
- Frequently transports and installs equipment up to 150 lbs.
- Performs required tasks at various heights (e.g., standing or sitting).
- Monitors and utilizes computers and test equipment for more than 6 hours a day.
- Continuous communication which includes the comprehension of information with colleagues, customers, and vendors both in person and remotely.
