Job Description
Job Title: Principal Backend Engineer
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 1 day/week onsite)
Duration: 6 months
Overview
We are looking for a Principal Backend Engineer to design and build scalable, cloud-native backend systems. This role involves leading architecture decisions, developing high-performance services in Python, and working on large-scale distributed systems and AI-enabled products.
Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services and APIs using Python
- Architect scalable, cloud-native solutions on AWS
- Work on distributed systems with high availability and performance needs
- Design and optimize database systems (SQL/NoSQL)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on product and architecture decisions
- Contribute to system design, technical standards, and best practices
- Support AI-powered product integrations and backend infrastructure
Requirements
- 7–10+ years backend engineering experience
- Strong experience in Python
- Strong AWS experience (production-scale systems)
- Experience with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL)
- Background in distributed systems and microservices
- Strong system design and architecture experience
- Experience with AI/ML-enabled systems
- Kubernetes, Docker, or event-driven architectures
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
- Experience in a Staff/Principal/Lead engineering role
