Job Description

Title: Technical Writer I
Location: Raleigh, NC preferably. Remote for now, but ok to come into office if needed.
Duration: 6-7 Months (possible extension)

Timings: 8AM-5PM EST.
 
Job Description:
Provides documentation contribution as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the Research and Development division. Develops, writes, and edits material for the operating system, system updates, user and installation/configuration manuals, and data sheets in print and/or electronic media. Attends meetings related to development of the product. Manages time sensitive projects ensuring adherence to technical documentation processes.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: – Other duties may be assigned:
  • Writes and edits technical documents in compliance with quality system and regulatory requirements.
  • Arranges the material to promote ease of use and fast access to needed information.
  • Looks for ways to perform tasks that are easier and/or more efficient or that increase the margin of safety.
  • Harmonizes technical communication deliverables with product branding and messaging.
  • Researches existing procedures and interviews Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to acquire source data and determine documentation requirements.
  • Translates engineering data into procedures and instructions suitable for use by the intended users.
  • Publishes final document in a DITA, Adobe and Word desktop publishing environment.
  • Supports and participates in documentation validation.
  • Maintains open communication with subject matter experts (SMEs) Service, Marketing, Training, Engineering, and Sustaining Engineering. Provides these teams with feedback and support on technical issues.
  • Creates and manipulates electronic files for archiving, on-line documentation publishing, and printing.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and adheres to technical documentation standards, communications, including templates and style guides.
  • Coordinates the printing, electronic publications, and distribution of technical documentation.
  • Disseminates documents for technical review and serves as collection point for feedback.
  • Serves on project teams as assigned.
  • Verifies information in Agile.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple, cross functional projects.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills with ability to promote team interaction and execution to streamline processes and to look at new technologies.
  • Builds consensus with partners by considering input and promoting trust between various functional areas.
  • Synthesizes complex information gathered from a variety of sources and disseminates to others.
 
Education, Experience, Qualifications and Skills:
  • 4+ years’ experience in technical writing / publishing or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years’ experience utilizing a structured phase gate product development process.
  • Technical aptitude. Ability to read and interpret engineering source data to include specifications, drawings, and parts lists.
  • Experience with Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) and the DITA Open Toolkit
  • Desktop publishing experience with Adobe products (e.g. Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Nice to Have: Experience with Cloud-based Technologies and/or Cloud-hosted Products
  • Required: Experience with Oxygen authoring tool
  • Nice to Have: Experience with a Source Code Management tool (SourceTree, GitHub, Bitbucket)
