Job Description

Job Title: Sr. Underwriter
Location: Remote, Candidates can be from any State but would prefer candidates from approved conversion States.(Must be in any one of the following states:

Hours:  M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in EST.
Duration: 6 months 

This role is supporting Large Group Underwriting and candidates need to have Large Group Underwriting or Level Funded Rating Experience.
Property and Casualty experience is not acceptable as the only experience, if they have P&C experience, they also need Large Group Underwriting or Level Funded Experience.
MS Office skills are required and experience working with Optum StepWise is nice to have.
Training will be virtual/web-based 

Job Description:

  • Manage Books of Business with up to 150,000 members and representing up to $400,000,000 in premium or premium equivalent.
  • Apply data analytics across book of business to identify trends or patterns and take corrective action as required.
  • Has the authority to make limited exceptions to standard underwriting policy and make underwriting recommendations to underwriters and associate underwriters
  • Manage and report monthly and YTD on all assigned financial and performance metrics as well as develop and produce ad hoc reports.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Department regarding their Business Segment and Corporate Projects.
  • Analyze underwriting risk and determine premium rates for fully insured contracts and recommends funding rates for Administrative Services Only (ASO) contracts.
  • Proactively utilize strong technical expertise to make recommendations regarding benefit plan design, stop loss levels, network feasibility and funding options to internal and external customers.
  • Actively participate in final rate negotiations and presentations with our large clients.
  • Recommend underwriting process and system changes resulting in enhanced productivity.
  • Participate in the Underwriting Department’s strategic and tactical planning.
  • Coach less experienced underwriters on matters related to risk selection and mitigation, data analytics and integrated goal management.
  • Assist with the development and provision of training to the underwriting staff, sales staff, and other departments in the principles and practices of underwriting and rating. 

Hiring Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or advanced degree (where required)

• 5+ years of experience in related field.

• In lieu of degree, 7+ years of experience in related field.
