Job Summary

The Hartford is seeking an experienced Remote Senior Staff Attorney to handle insurance defense litigation throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. This role is ideal for an attorney with extensive trial experience who can independently manage cases from inception through trial while working collaboratively with Claims Professionals and insured clients.

The position focuses on:

  • Premises Liability
  • Products Liability
  • Commercial Automobile Accidents
  • Personal Automobile Accidents

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues through extensive legal research.
  • Develop and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery documents, and deposition materials with minimal supervision.
  • Partner with Claims Professionals to achieve the best outcomes for insured clients.
  • Provide timely legal advice and case updates to clients and claims partners.
  • Communicate professionally with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel.
  • Manage assigned litigation efficiently from inception through resolution.
  • Prepare and present witnesses and evidence during trials, hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Research, draft, file, and argue substantive motions.
  • Provide legal opinions and guidance to management, staff, clients, and claims professionals.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and eligible to practice in federal courts.
  • Minimum 7 years of tort defense litigation experience in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and technology skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn and use new software and AI tools.
  • Demonstrated experience handling insurance claims litigation.

Preferred Qualification

  • First-chair jury trial and appellate experience.

Work Environment

  • Fully remote position.
  • Must be available to travel within Maryland and the District of Columbia when required.
  • Collaborative work environment with direct interaction with Claims Professionals, insureds, and clients.

Compensation

  • Annual Base Salary: $132,400 – $198,600
