Job title: Assembly Tech - Assembly Tech Duration: 6 Months with possible extension Location: Wilmington, MA Shift : 1st Shift
Role Overview The Boston Development Center is a rapid prototyping and low-rate production facility that takes products from early prototype through pre-production builds. The Electromechanical Build Technician will assemble products, perform mechanical and electrical integration, prepare assemblies for end-of-line testing, and collaborate with design and manufacturing engineers in a fast-paced development environment.
Key Responsibilities
Execute build campaigns for subassemblies and full system integration across multiple products.
Perform mechanical and electrical assemblies and final integration of subassemblies into full systems.
Interpret engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, wiring schematics, and assembly work instructions.
Maintain quality and throughput targets, track build progress, and communicate parts shortages or design issues to production leadership.
Prepare assemblies for end-of-line functional testing, performance characterization, system-level testing, and safety validation.
Perform in-process quality inspections to verify fit, alignment, torque specifications, electrical continuity, and connector seating.
Conduct dimensional checks using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, go/no-go gauges, and torque wrenches.
Document build deviations, non-conformances, and quality incidents.
Verify hardware readiness and cable/connector integrity before software loading.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers throughout the build process.
Provide design-for-assembly (DFA) feedback to simplify builds, reduce cycle time, and improve reliability.
Coordinate with production planners and material handlers on parts kitting and staging.
Develop and refine assembly work instructions, process documentation, and standard operating procedures.
Maintain organized workstations and tools following 5S principles.
Support multiple concurrent build programs and participate in build readiness and after-action reviews.
Basic Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical and/or electrical assembly of prototype or low-volume hardware products.
Experience with precision mechanical and electrical assembly.
Familiarity with calibrated torque wrenches, crimpers, soldering irons, hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic tools.
Ability to work in an engineering and production environment with build rate targets and quality standards.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree or technical certification in electromechanical technology, mechatronics, robotics, or a related field.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and 3D CAD models.
5+ years of experience in robotics, aerospace, automotive, or consumer electronics prototyping/pre-production environments.
Experience assembling actuator systems, including motors, gearboxes, encoders, brakes, and related drive components.
Experience assembling articulated multi-axis robotic systems or similar complex electromechanical products.
Familiarity with GD&T and basic metrology tools; CMM or 3D scanner experience is a plus.
Experience in low-rate initial production (LRIP) environments with ramp-up targets.
Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced development environment.
