Position Overview Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Truss Design Manager to lead and support the design function for a wood component manufacturing operation. This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced truss designer who enjoys staying involved in technical design while providing direction, coaching, and quality oversight to a design team. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in wood roof and floor truss design, advanced MiTek software knowledge, and practical experience working directly with manufacturing and production teams. This role will also partner with estimating, sales, and operations to ensure designs are accurate, efficient, manufacturable, and aligned with customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and support a team of truss designers and design support staff.
Remain hands-on with truss design and provide technical guidance on complex projects.
Review and approve truss designs for accuracy, code compliance, constructability, and manufacturability.
Utilize MiTek Sapphire Structure and related MiTek tools to develop and modify roof and floor truss designs.
Manage design workload, priorities, schedules, and turnaround times.
Collaborate closely with production, sales, estimating, and other operational teams.
Provide technical support when design issues arise during manufacturing, delivery, or field installation.
Help optimize designs for material utilization, labor efficiency, and overall production performance.
Maintain and improve design standards, workflows, quality-control procedures, and documentation.
Support estimating and quoting activities by providing technical input and design expertise.
Assist with training and development of designers, including identifying opportunities for improvement.
Serve as a key technical resource for MiTek-related systems, including setup, databases, licensing, troubleshooting, and user support.
Coordinate effectively with both internal and external/remote design resources as needed.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives designed to improve design turnaround, material efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, industry standards, and TPI requirements.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on wood truss design experience covering both roof and floor trusses, along with 2+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience; alternatively, 7+ years of directly relevant combined experience.
Advanced hands-on proficiency with MiTek Sapphire Structure is required.
Strong understanding of wood truss design principles, load paths, bearing conditions, girder trusses, hip point loads, web configurations, plating, and lumber specifications.
Demonstrated experience reviewing and approving the work of other designers.
Previous experience assigning workloads, providing technical direction, coaching team members, and managing performance.
Experience working in or closely with a truss/component manufacturing environment.
Strong understanding of manufacturing constraints, material utilization, production requirements, and constructability.
Ability to troubleshoot design issues and effectively collaborate with production and field personnel.
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability and willingness to work fully on-site in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with MiTek MBA or other related MiTek applications.
Experience supporting estimating, quoting, or sales activities.
Experience managing a combination of in-house and remote/outsourced design resources.
Experience serving as a primary MiTek technical resource for a manufacturing operation.
Experience with design process improvement and measurable operational improvements.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
Strong technical aptitude, including exposure to coding, automation, databases, or broader IT systems.
