Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Checker
Location: Novi, MI (Preferred) | Regional Remote Option with Regular Travel to Novi Office
Duration: 6 Months 

Position Overview

Client's PDMS division is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Checker to support the Novi, Michigan facility. This role will focus on reviewing and validating mechanical engineering drawings, identifying design corrections, and ensuring drawings meet manufacturing, quality, and industry standards before release.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in industrial machine design, automation systems, mechanical drafting standards, GD&T, and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Review mechanical 2D engineering drawings and provide red-line markups to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with industry standards.
• Validate designs for fit, tolerancing, manufacturability, and assembly requirements across sheet metal, weldments, forging, casting, and machined components.
• Apply strong knowledge of drafting standards including ANSI/ASME, ISO, and MIL specifications.
• Verify mechanical designs of functional machines and tooling based on specifications, performance requirements, and cycle times.
• Perform and document basic engineering calculations to validate designs.
• Support drawing reviews using GD&T principles and ensure compliance with customer requirements (imperial and metric standards).
• Collaborate with engineering and development teams to improve drawing review processes and reduce design errors/rework.
• Develop best-practice documentation and guidelines to support designers and engineers.
• Assist with improvements to design tools, markup processes, change tracking, and drawing review workflows.

Required Qualifications

• 10–15+ years of experience in industrial machine design, mechanical design checking, or automation systems.
• Strong experience with 2D AutoCAD and proficiency with Inventor 3D, Mechanical Desktop, or SolidWorks.
• Advanced understanding of mechanical drafting standards and documentation practices.
• Hands-on experience applying GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) principles.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes including:
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Welding/weldments
  • Forging
  • Casting
  • Machining processes
• Familiarity with engineering change management and design documentation processes.
• Experience reviewing both metric and imperial drawings.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

• Formal GD&T training or certification.
• Experience with machine automation, tooling design, and complex mechanical assemblies.
• Familiarity with standards such as:
  • ANSI Y14.5
  • ISO 128 series
  • ISO 1101
  • ISO 5456 series
  • MIL-STD-31000
  • MIL-STD-1472
