POLICE RECRUIT

Definition: Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in an intensive 24 week training program of classroom and hands-on practical instruction that includes the core knowledge and skills needed by police officers to work in the State of Missouri.

Examples of Duties:

· Participates in classroom, role playing, and physical training exercises and testing in the areas of Constitutional Law, Missouri Statutory Law, Traffic Law, Interpersonal Skills, Patrol, Criminal Investigation, Report Writing, Traffic Accident Investigation, Juvenile Justice and Procedures, First Aid, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Driver Training and Physical Training.

· Participates in training and exercises to conduct security inspections of buildings; observe, detect and investigate violations of laws and ordinances; conduct interviews and interrogations of victims, witnesses, suspects and offenders; conduct searches of persons, vehicles, places and things; identify and arrest offenders; investigate traffic accidents; deal with children of all ages in a variety of situations; deal with domestic disputes; deal with mentally ill persons; administer first aid; investigate reports of lost and found property; investigate reports of missing and found persons; prepare clear, accurate and complete reports.

· Participates in training and exercises to meet physical conditioning requirements; react and move rapidly from a sedentary to active condition, respond to a physical attack; operate a motor vehicle; operate and qualify with the Department issued firearms; operate officer equipment; arrest and apprehend suspects; adequately judge distances and estimate speed; employ the normal senses of touch and smell; speak, read and write the English language; effectively relate to or communicate with a variety of personality types during interpersonal contacts.

· Participates in public service activities/events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Successfully complete the police recruit selection process and demonstrate the necessary skills and abilities to apply knowledge obtained to realistic role playing situations and passing cognitive tests. Recruits are challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. Ability to wear and effectively utilize all Department issued items of uniforms and equipment as specified in the Department’s General Order, Uniforms and Appearance, regardless of training assignment. Ability to work regular and irregular hours in order to accomplish the objectives of the training program, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year (weekends and holidays included). Work shifts are normally eight (8) hours in duration but may be extended due to required training, in the event of an emergency, disaster or work-in-progress.
