Summary

The Phlebotomist II will assist in performing a variety of clinical and laboratory duties, including troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The role requires strong phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and complete decontamination tasks.

• Record maintenance data and update patient information accurately.

• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine, fecal) to patients.

• Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

• Accurately interpret and follow physician orders.

• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens per test order.

• Verify requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.

• Package and prepare specimens for transport, maintaining integrity through proper storage and temperature requirements.

• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations at all times.

• Attend annual departmental trainings.

• Answer phone calls and relay laboratory results as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (required in some states).

• 2–4 years of experience, with at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

• High School Diploma or GED.
