Job Description

Role: Transmission Line Structural Engineer
Duration: 7 months (Potential for extension)
Location: Pomona, CA
Hybrid work schedule (at least 2 days per week in office on Wed. & Th. is required)

Role Overview
Position: Structural Engineer (Engineer V / Senior Engineer equivalent)
Focus: Transmission line structural engineering (towers, foundations, and load analysis).
Primary Responsibilities:
• Structural engineering for transmission line projects.
• Analysis & design of lattice towers and foundations.
• Perform structural load calculations (per ASCE 7-05 and related standards).
• Support ongoing construction/maintenance issues: field inspections, mitigation reports, and repair solutions for damaged towers/footings.
• Provide structural support on urgent/emergency issues (e.g., post-fire inspections).
• Extract and interpret structural load data from PLS-CADD / PLS-Tower and PSCA (load reactions).
• Modify, improve, and enforce models from scratch or existing ones.

Technical Skills Required
Core Tools:
PLS-Tower – must be fully proficient (model creation, modifications, improvements).
PLS-CADD – working knowledge for defining/extracting structural load cases.
FEA tools (or similar) for foundation design.
Structural Expertise:
• Foundation design (deep subject matter knowledge).
• Transmission line structural load analysis.
• Ability to apply industry codes/standards (e.g., ASCE 7-05).

Qualifications
Experience:
7+ years minimum (more preferred).
Licensing:
California PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred (strong plus).
• May consider candidates without PE if highly skilled (but role level may adjust downward).
• Reports can potentially be reviewed/signed off by in-house PE if candidate lacks license.
Education: Structural/Civil Engineering background (not explicitly mentioned but implied).

Work Model
Hybrid Requirement:
• Must be in-office 2 days per week (Wednesday & Thursday).
• Not open to fully remote arrangements.
• Exceptions are very rare and require higher-level approvals.
Field Work:
• Mostly office-based (design & analysis).
• Field inspections are occasional and situational (e.g., emergency outages, fires).
• <10% of total role.

Interview Process
Step 1: 1-hour interview.
Step 2 (if needed): Additional interview(s) depending on first-round outcome.
Timeline: Hiring ASAP (urgency emphasized).

Key Manager Clarifications
Licensing Flexibility:
• Open to reviewing strong candidates without PE.
• Lack of PE could affect title/level.
Relocation:
• Candidates must be willing to relocate or commute weekly.
• Recruiters should vet non-local candidates carefully to ensure commitment to hybrid model.
Job Level:
• Posted as Engineer V (internal definition aligns with Senior Engineer).
Design vs. Field Split:
• Predominantly design/analysis.
• Field involvement only in rare emergencies.

Action Items for Recruiters
• Prioritize CA-licensed PE structural engineers with PLS-Tower expertise.
• Source locally first; if non-local, confirm candidate is 100% willing to work hybrid (Wed & Thu onsite).
• Screen for minimum 7 years’ experience in transmission structural engineering.
• Ensure candidates are comfortable with occasional emergency field inspections.
• Clarify that role is urgent – managers want quick turnaround.
