Description:
Day-to-Day Responsibilities/Workload
  • The Lab Technician's job duties are performed in a Facility which includes working in an office and two facility Laboratories. The two facility’s laboratories are the Technology Test Center (TTC) Lab and the Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) Lab, both located at the company’s Gateway facility in Irwindale, CA. The work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Lab Technician.
  • The Lab Technician performs laboratory maintenance, lab testing and analysis. The technician works on various types of customer side-of-meter equipment. This includes heat pump water heaters, HVAC (Heating & Air Conditioning) systems, refrigeration systems, lighting and building control systems, portable battery power systems, and other technologies. The purpose of this testing is to better understand the performance of these various technologies. This ensures that company's customer programs are providing rebates on equipment that offers proper value.
Required Skills/Attributes          
  • Performs in-depth testing of various customer side-of-meter technologies under supervision of Senior Lab Technician and Project Lead Engineers. These technologies include appliances or heating and cooling systems. This is done using laboratory tools and equipment. The lab tools used may be hand-held manual or power tools, or machine tools. The lab equipment used may include large or complex equipment. Examples of these are thermal test chambers, refrigeration systems, or an integrating Lighting Sphere. The testing process includes reading and understanding testing plans, collecting data, and analyzing equipment performance. It also involves developing reports on lab test results.
  • Must have prior hands-on experience with laboratory work in all or some of the following areas: electrical systems, plumbing, thermal systems (HVAC; refrigeration), instrumentation, lab computers and Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), equipment calibration, and knowledge of lab safety practices.
  • Calibrates, operates, and performs inventory tracking on various types of lab tools and equipment. Works with manufacturers and vendors as needed for this task.
  • Sets up and performs maintenance on various types of lab tools and lab testing equipment. This may involve working with electrical, plumbing, instrumentation, computers, thermal, and mechanical systems. Supports remodeling and upgrading of specific lab areas or equipment under supervision of a Senior Lab Technician.
  • Completes all work while providing a safe and productive environment.
  • Keeps the lab work areas clean and safe, including cleaning up at end of workday.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Calibrates and performs inventory tracking on various types of lab tools and equipment.
  • Set up and perform maintenance on various types of lab tools and lab testing equipment.
  • Completing work safely; carefully documents the work performed; and keeps work area clean and neat.
  • Clearly communicating the result of the lab testing analysis or any problems and discusses with the Senior Lab Technician and the Project Lead Engineer.
Years of experience: 3 to 5 years of experience preferred.
Soft skills: Can communicate problems and results effectively to team members; can support team members when asked. Is confident enough to stop work and reach out to others when safety may become an issue.
