Job Description

Job Title: Data Analyst III
Duration: 06 Months (Possible extension)
Location: Remote
Summary:
  • This senior level position is responsible to prepare business specific analysis by using mathematical concepts and data modeling to identify trends and prepare recommendations for business solutions. Also responsible for quality and quantity of sound decisions around business processes. The Data Analyst III is able to independently work with more than one business group and the top stakeholders in the business units. Data Analyst  is needed to help build a data aggregation layer (code/pipelines) that pulls and consolidates data from multiple sources, then outputs standardized datasets that can feed Tableau or Power BI. These outputs should be ingestible by Progressive customers (internal/external stakeholders), implying governance, quality, and secure access.
Top must-have skills:
  • SQL coding language
  • SAS coding language
  • Power BI (and DAX coding)
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office (Teams, Outlook and Excel skills with knowledge of spreadsheet functionality including v-look-up, pivot tables, charts, graphing and macros.
Nice to haves:
  • Experience using STAR schema databases
  • Snowflake coding and experience
Responsibilities:
50% Analyze Results
  • Summarizes and presents analysis findings and discusses recommendations for next steps.
  • Builds on present analysis to build future analysis.
  • Explains analysis by discussing analysis approach and summary of findings.
  • Gains commitment to action and ensures implementation of recommended actions.
  • Uses judgment to recommend workable alternatives to stakeholders.
  • Develops and modifies programs when more complex analysis in required.
30% Analysis and Reporting Needs:
  • Works with business partners to analyze needs for information and converts them into action items, requests or projects.
  • Gathers requirements and develops specifications for business analysis needs.
  • Retrieves data from various sources and prepares data for analysis.
  • Verifies accuracy of data pulled and revises methods of data retrieval.
  • Develops complex queries against data sources.
  • Develops spreadsheets and tools for management use.
  • Compiles and prepares reports, graphs and charts of data developed.
  • Prepares forecasts, identifies and analyzes trends.
  • Recommends process improvements and/or goal changes.
  • Serves as expert on multiple data sources.
15% Department Liaison/Project Work:
  • Participates in the formation of business plans and forecasts and provides answers to questions about business data to appropriate business units.
  • Supports business area projects by applying general knowledge of the business area processes including best practices.
  • Works on projects beyond the scope of their own business area.
  • May provide data and respond to questions to external groups/agencies/vendors.
5% Coaching:
  • Mentors lower-level staff work assignments and training needed.
  • Has project ownership and distributes project components to other staff members.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Finance, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics or Statistics.
  • Five years business experience with two years prior analysis experience.
  • Master's degree in lieu of experience.
  • Thorough understanding of business processes and systems knowledge.
  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office with advanced skills in Excel with knowledge of spreadsheet functionality including v-look-up, pivot tables, charts, graphing and macros.
  • Database experience including the ability to create PowerPoint graphs, tables and information reports in slide format.
  • Proficient in MBI, Crystal, or other reporting tools.
  • Highly proficient in SAS and SQL programming skills.
  • Solid communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations.
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information and matches data from multiple sources
Day to day responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with Senior Analysts who will help organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Participate in onboarding sessions to understand project scope and expectations.
  • Receive training on data sources, including fundamentals and differences between old and new systems.
  • Understand client’s data structure and reporting standards.
  • Review existing reports from the legacy system.
  • Interpret how each report is built (logic, calculations, data relationships).
  • Write code to recreate the same data in the new data source.
  • Rebuild reports in Power BI based on provided specifications.
  • Ensure reports meet Progressive’s design and functionality standards.
  • Perform QA checks and validations to confirm accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct multiple rounds of testing (including QQA) before finalizing.
  • Complete one report at a time, then move to the next.
  • Approximately 100 reports will need to be migrated.
  • Start with slower pace during learning phase; timing expectations will adjust as proficiency increases.
  • Some reports may take longer due to complexity; others may be completed quickly.
Who is this worker's main interaction going to be with:
  • Independently, local team of analysts: primary focus.
  • Team is on the corporate side- high level. Approximately, 4-6 data analysts on the team, but this contractor will work with 2 Sr Analysts and a Lead Analyst.
How will performance be measured:
  • Work under evolving timelines—expectations will be set progressively.
  • Maintain flexibility and communicate progress regularly
