Job Description

Job Title: Budget/Business Analyst
Duration: 5 Months (There is a strong possibility that this role could transition into a full-time position. While it's not guaranteed, it is very likely.)
Location: 9860 Mesa Rim Road, San Diego, CA 92121 
(Hybrid, typically 3 days onsite. Possible remote once fully trained and demonstrates meeting productivity expectations.)
Work hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm (flexible)

Dress Code: Business casual

Job Description:
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator to prepare the administrative components of proposals in compliance with sponsored and non-sponsored research guidelines.
  • Manage and communicate the submission process for both paper and electronic formats, ensuring all documents are complete and compliant.
  • Develop, prepare, and finalize project budgets, including providing detailed budget justifications.
  • Act as the primary liaison and active partner between principal investigators, the Office of Sponsored Research, research teams, and other departments.
  • Address sponsor inquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Work closely with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure proper award setup and fulfillment of cost-sharing requirements. Initiate and manage cost transfers as needed.
  • Review and approve expenditures while advising on post-award spending and commitment activities.
  • Ensure compliance with funding and revenue policies.
  • Prepare and deliver reports detailing project status, offering effective forecasting tools and decision-making support.
  • Manage the contract closeout process, including submitting final reports and certifications.
  • Compile necessary information and documentation for audit inquiries.
  • Interpret, apply, and provide guidance on university and government policies related to research projects.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource for principal investigators and university staff.
  • Contribute to and lead process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff in collaborative group projects.
Must-Haves for this role:
  • Financial Analysis: Proven experience in financial analysis and budget analysis.
  • Excel Proficiency: Strong analytical skills in Excel with the ability to quickly identify trends and issues.
  • Critical Thinking: Exceptional critical thinking skills are essential.
  • Experience: 2–3 years in an Analyst position.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (required), preferably in Accounting or Finance.
  • Academic Environment: Prior experience in an academic setting is a must.
