Job Description

Title: Compliance Specialist V/ Laser Safety Specialist
Location: Sunnyvale, CA (Onsite)
Travel: Required (Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Fremont; occasional travel to Redmond, WA)
Duration: 8+ Months

Job Summary:
The Laser Safety Specialist will support Global EHS programs with a primary focus on laser and radiation safety. This role involves conducting lab inspections, reviewing R&D experiments, evaluating equipment requirements, and performing laser exposure calculations and measurements.

The specialist will ensure proper safety controls for employees working with lasers and radiation sources, while also supporting the radiation safety program, including X-ray device compliance and safety audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct audits of labs for laser and radiation safety compliance
  • Analyze safety hazards and assist in defining requirements for hardware involving lasers, LEDs, and X-ray systems
  • Review R&D experiments and evaluate safety risks
  • Implement and maintain compliance with safety standards such as:
    • ANSI Z136.1
    • IEC 60825
    • IEC 62471
    • FLPPS (FDA/CDRH)
  • Develop, review, and approve SOPs related to laser and optical hazards
  • Review and approve work performed by external laser service technicians
  • Perform laser measurements (power, spectral, temporal) and exposure calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ)
  • Conduct X-ray leakage surveys and ensure compliance with state regulations (e.g., CDPH in California)
  • Simulate fault conditions to validate safety and design integrity of optical equipment
  • Identify safety gaps and develop corrective actions; communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with research, engineering, and product teams
  • Support additional EHS programs as needed, including:
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
    • Lab safety
    • Chemical safety
    • Electrical safety
    • Machine guarding

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following (or related field):
    • Physics
    • Optical Sciences
    • Engineering
    • Health Physics
    • Nuclear Engineering / Nuclear Physics
      (Relevant LSO/RSO experience may substitute for degree)
  • Experience with safety investigations (development, testing, or failure analysis)
  • Hands-on experience with radiation sources (lasers, LEDs, X-ray systems)
  • Background in technical/engineering roles involving:
    • Field testing
    • Failure analysis
    • Reliability engineering
  • Familiarity with ANSI Z136.1 laser safety standards
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and reporting abilities
  • Self-driven with ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and/or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
  • Experience in hardware R&D or production environments
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory standards:
    • IEC 60825-1
    • IEC 62471-1
    • FDA/CDRH FLPPS
  • Experience with federal reporting (import/export, model changes, annual reports)
  • Expertise in laser safety calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ)
  • Experience with:
    • FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
    • Fault Tree Analysis
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams through data-driven insights
  • Experience developing in-house testing methods for optical safety
  • Additional experience in:
    • RF/EMF safety (FCC, IEEE C95.1)
    • Ultrasound safety (nice to have)
