The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection, such as urine or fecal, as required.
Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understands physicians' orders.
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order.
Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
Packages specimens for transport.
Stores specimen samples according to required temperature.
Places samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes.
Accurately labels specimens and follows specific procedures and protocols necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attends annual department trainings.
Answers telephone calls and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed, as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
5–7 years of experience.
