Job Title: Fire Protection / Mechanical Engineer
Duration: 12 Months
Location: Herndon, Virginia
Services to Be Performed
We are seeking an outstanding Fire Protection or Mechanical Engineer with strong technical and analytical skills, combined with the ability to deliver results quickly and effectively. The engineer will be responsible for implementing standardized fire protection systems (fire suppression, fire detection, fire alarm) and overall fire safety mechanical design, including related code analysis for Data Centers. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in fire protection and/or mechanical engineering with experience in building fire protection system design, construction, and/or operations.
Key Responsibilities

Drive improvements in design standards and project approaches.

Collaborate with third-party design vendors to review concept and in-progress designs to ensure compliance with established standards, local codes, and AHJ (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) requirements.

Manage interdisciplinary coordination of fire protection and life safety design elements.

Coordinate with construction, commissioning, and risk management teams to resolve RFIs and value engineering queries.

Develop and oversee construction documents, code compliance, design/installation standards, water supply evaluations, testing, inspections, and submittal reviews.

Meet with AHJs as needed to secure approval of fire protection features.

Review fire suppression and fire alarm system construction submittals, including shop drawings, calculations, product data, and RFIs.
Required Skills
-
BSc/MSc in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent degree (or 5+ years of qualifying experience).

Minimum 2 years of experience in design engineering or construction, specifically in fire protection engineering (fire suppression, fire alarm/detection systems, fire-resistive construction, life safety).

Experience applying NFPA standards, ICC requirements, and other fire protection codes/standards.

Experience with design reviews, development of design standards, and submittal reviews.

Proficiency in construction documentation (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.).

Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Skills
-
Experience in data centers, critical medical facilities, industrial, construction, oil & gas, or large-scale mechanical/power systems.

Familiarity with Code Modification Requests (CMRs) and Alternate Materials and Methods (AMM) proposals.

Experience working with fire marshals, fire plan examiners, fire inspectors, or AHJs.

Proficiency with engineering project management software.
