Float Phlebotomist II
Duration: 3+ Months

Position Overview:
This is a float position. The Hiring Manager has advised that the candidate's home base will be the office location closest to where they live.

Areas of coverage may include:

• Baltimore City
• Glen Burnie
• Columbia

There is no guarantee the candidate will work at all of these locations. Additional coverage may be required in Clarksburg, Frederick, and Olney.

Shift: 1st Shift

Schedule:

• Monday – Friday
• Operating hours: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• One Saturday shift per month required

Shifts will be 8 hours in length. Depending on the assigned location, candidates may start as early as 6:00 AM or finish as late as 7:00 PM.

Description:

Summary:
The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities:

• Perform blood draws and specimen collections.
• Label specimens accurately.
• Centrifuge specimens.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures.
• Update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture (blood draw) and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal samples) to patients.
• Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport.
• Store specimens at required temperatures and in appropriate collection containers/tubes.
• Accurately label specimens and follow transport protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer telephone calls and communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 2–4 years of related experience.

Preferred Skills / Screening Criteria:

1. Pediatric and geriatric drawing experience.
2. Reliable transportation, as this is a float position.
3. Comfortable working independently or as part of a team.
4. Strong communication skills.
5. High level of professionalism.
