Job Description

Position Title: Phlebotomist II

Work Location: 2101 Medical Park Drive, Silver Spring, MD

Assignment Duration: 3-Month

Work Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Work Arrangement: Onsite


Position Summary

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing blood draws and supporting lab operations, including troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations in a primary care (IOP) setting.


Background & Context

  • Coverage for FMLA at a Primary Care IOP (doctor’s office)
  • Potential for extension or conversion

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge, and process samples
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures
  • Collect and store specimens according to established protocols
  • Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients
  • Demonstrate proper techniques using straight and butterfly needles
  • Review and understand physician orders
  • Match laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Ensure accuracy of test requisitions and labels
  • Package specimens for transport
  • Maintain proper specimen storage conditions and transport protocols
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend required training sessions
  • Handle phone inquiries and communicate lab results
  • Draw blood, process specimens, enter physician orders, and manage supply ordering

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state)
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital
  • 2–4 years of overall experience preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skills:
    • Phlebotomy
    • Customer Service
    • Flexibility
  • Comfortable working independently and handling hard sticks

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Standing for most of the shift (with lunch break)
  • Small primary care doctor’s office (IOP setting)
  • Working independently
  • First two weeks training at:
    • Linthicum, MD
    • Baltimore Ave PSC / Laurel, MD

Additional Information

  • Full-time: 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week
  • Daily draws: ~20 patients (teenagers, adults, geriatrics)
  • Work environment: Supportive but requires strong attendance and professionalism
  • Required: Color vision screening
  • Vaccines: MMR, TB, Hepatitis B (can be declined)
  • Candidates must be local to DC Metro area (Silver Spring, Laurel, Washington DC; Baltimore is too far)
  • Must be adaptable, quick on feet, and provide excellent customer service
