Summary: The main function of a chemical technician is to conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials. The research technician works on research and development in an experimental lab and collects samples or produces compounds.
Job Responsibilities:
Work closely with scientists to support research projects related to the mining industry, including mineral scale control and mineral flotation
Perform mineral precipitation tests by calculating and preparing dilutions, setting up and running reactions, and analyzing solutions using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA)
Prepare and analyze mineral samples by grinding ore, pressing pellets, performing gravimetric analysis, and running x-ray fluorescence (XRF)
Communicate clearly with scientists to understand tasks for different projects, explain results, and plan work schedule
Carefully follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for moderately complex but routine tasks and instrumentation
Make observations while conducting lab work and report potential issues to scientists in a timely manner
Prioritize safety by understanding lab protocols and proper waste disposal procedures
Maintain clean and organized lab spaces and equipment, and restock supplies as needed
Use digital tools to tabulate, organize, and plot data, document experimental results, and send reports to scientists.
Nice To Have
Experience one or more of the following analytical instruments or spectroscopy: XRF, XRD, ICP, IC, AA, IR/FTIR, UV/vis, turbidity, colorimetry, HPLC, GC, MS, NMR
Experience performing one or more of the following wet chemical methods: titrations, acid digestion, gravimetry, chromatography, or electrochemistry
Experience with method development/improving testing or experimental protocols
Experience working directly with scientists in support of research projects
TECHNICAL SKILLS Must Have
At least one year of experience working in a chemistry or microbiology lab
Capable of supporting multiple projects simultaneously
Degree in Mining Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific field
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage their own experiment schedule
Detail-oriented with strong observational skills
Eagerness to learn new skills and flexibility to accommodate a dynamic lab environment
Skills:
Creativity, verbal and written communication skills, analytical and problem solving ability.
Team player and detail oriented
Time management.
Communication skills:
The individual must be comfortable to ask questions and share observations / opinions.
Basic knowledge of the chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo.
Education/Experience:
Associate's degree in applied science or related field required. Bachelor's degree in mining engineering, materials science, chemistry or chemical engineering preferred.
