Job Title: Staff Physical Substation Designer – Transmission & Distribution
Location: Akron, OH / Columbus, OH
Duration: Direct Hire (Full-time)
Travel: 5%
Work Model: Fully Onsite


Role Overview:
  • Client is hiring for a Staff Physical Substation Designer to support physical substation design work within the Transmission & Distribution group.
  • This req is posted for both Columbus and Akron, but it is the same role with two location options.
  • This is a physical substation design / CAD-focused role. This should not be treated as a Protection & Controls / P&C role.
  • The client mentioned that this role is more specific to the physical engineer / physical designer need. The job description reads more like a CAD/design background, but the team has also had engineers perform this type of work because they are seeing a lack of CAD technicians who can go deep enough into this subset of engineering.
  • Please focus on candidates with true physical substation design experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, design documents for proposals, specifications, and electrical plans as part of a project team.
  • Execute complex early design phases while partnering with diverse firms and international resources on detailed design work.
  • Perform electrical project designs including substation plan layouts, section cuts, physical details, ground grid design, lightning design, and other physical substation components.
  • Follow company, client, and project design/drafting standards.
  • Perform drawing, planning, development, and production work.
  • Perform problem analysis, design layout, and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Perform drawing sequence and presentation work.
  • Size various system components.
  • Refine rough sketches.
  • Evaluate designs, sketches, redlines, and markups on ongoing projects for quality assurance.
  • Approve design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
  • Produce design drawings within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Complete project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.
  • Compute volume calculations for conduit, lightning, and grounding designs under the direction of the engineer.
  • Incorporate schedules, budgets, and project criteria into electrical design and layouts to support project financial goals.
  • Review all revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.
  • Train, mentor, and develop less experienced drafting, detailing, and design staff members.
  • Support the development of subcontracted diverse firms and client international affiliates.
  • Participate in marketing and possible client development meetings.
  • Own/support the physical design QA/QC process.
  • Evaluate manufacturer/vendor prints to confirm they meet design criteria.
Tools / Technical Skills:
  • AutoCAD.
  • MicroStation.
  • Excel.
  • 2D design applications.
  • 3D design applications.
  • Ability to learn and use new design software programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of design, calculations, and design systems.
  • Knowledge of design software needed to execute production tasks.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field and 7 years of related experience OR Associate degree and 8 years of related experience OR 9 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
Core Competencies:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment.
  • Ability to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate.
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced design/drafting staff.
Interview Process:
  • Initial 30-minute Teams screen / meet-and-greet.
  • Formal interview after that (Formal interview is usually in person if the candidate is local, but exceptions can be made for non-local candidates.).
