Mechanical Engineer – Packaging Automation
Location: Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week Westborough MA
Duration: 12 Months
Travel: Up to ~20%
Role Overview
The Mechanical Engineer designs automated packaging, sortation, and labeling platforms to enable faster and more efficient delivery operations.
This role provides technical ownership and continuous refinement of packaging, sortation, and labeling automation systems. Working closely with Electrical and Controls Engineering teams, the Mechanical Engineer will execute the design, development, and manufacturing of in-house packaging machinery and automation solutions.
Leveraging established packaging machinery and automation platforms and modules, this role drives project- and platform-level design evolution from concept through production. Co-located with electrical and controls engineers, packaging designers, and materials scientists, the Mechanical Engineer leads mechanical design and development to ensure solutions are simple, effective, scalable, cost-efficient, and aligned with sustainability and total cost of ownership objectives.
Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects

Lead mechanical design workstreams including:
-
Core system and platform evolution
-
Modular frame and structural member design
-
Safety systems and guarding
-
Integration of ancillary subsystems
-

Ensure technical, cost, and schedule objectives are achieved at the project and platform level
-
Deliver engineering workstreams including:
-
Drive system modeling
-
Load and bearing calculations
-
Static and dynamic torque simulations and analysis
-
3D and 2D CAD modeling
-
Mechanical bill of materials (BOM) generation
-

Execute detailed design evolution of modules and subsystems to meet material specifications, geographic requirements, and continuous improvement goals
-
Develop functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures
-
Partner with Electrical and Controls Engineering to ensure documentation is complete and scalable, including electrical schematics, BOMs, I/O lists, and subsystem programs
-
Support safety certification activities for machinery and platforms (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc.)

Support prototype testing efforts and collaborate during validation and testing phases

Hybrid schedule with 3 days onsite per week at BOS27

Prototype testing environment with advanced automation and robotic technology

Exposure to noise, moving machinery, and varying temperatures

Strict adherence to safety protocols required

May require flexible hours to support testing schedules and coordination with remote teams

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
-
8+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial automation or machinery environments
-
Experience designing custom mechanical components and assemblies
-
Strong experience integrating sensors, actuators, and controls hardware with automated machinery
-
Proven experience executing product design from concept through production
-
Proficiency in 3D design and simulation software, including but not limited to:

ANSYS

Creo
-
CATIA
-
SolidWorks
-

Experience developing:

Strong ability to work in interdisciplinary engineering teams
