Job Description

Position Title: Laboratory Technician
Work Location: Johnston IA
Assignment Duration: 12 + Months

Position Summary: The MBD lab utilizes state-of-the-art molecular, genomics, and NGS technologies to discover novel genes that contribute to disease resistance. The successful candidate will provide hands-on support for these key R&D discovery efforts and collaborate with internal groups to accomplish project goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will support microbial gene editing and gene discovery efforts within the Molecular-based Discovery group.
  • Performing day-to-day lab activities, including but not limited to: Media preparation, microbe culturing, seed planting, and plant care within growth chambers.
  • Assisting with CRISPR/Cas-mediated gene editing, including timely colony selection and transfer.
  • Performing nucleic acid (DNA, RNA) extractions, PCR, and subsequent analysis of products via gel electrophoresis.
  • Conducting disease bioassays, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting results to the manager.
  • Maintaining clean, organized, and orderly laboratory spaces.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualification & Experience:
  • An M.S. or B.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Plant Pathology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on laboratory benchwork experience, including working in a sterile (aseptic) environment.
  • Experience with plant-microbe interactions, molecular discovery, and disease resistance concepts is highly desirable.
  • Meticulous experimental data recording and record-keeping, with a proven ability to follow lab protocols, manage workflows, and accurately collect, analyze, and report data in a timely manner.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills with strong attention to details.
  • A demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively within multicultural and interdisciplinary teams.
  • A passion for agriculture and biotechnology, combined with an eagerness to learn and a positive attitude.
