Senior Mechanical Engineer (Power Generation Facility)

Overview
Oglethorpe Power Corporation is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems at our power generation facilities, including combustion turbines, combined cycle, and pumped-storage hydroelectric plants. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and long-term performance of Georgia’s energy infrastructure.
You will lead overhaul planning, optimize mechanical systems, and apply predictive and preventive maintenance practices to keep our facilities operating at peak performance. This role also provides opportunities to design and implement capital projects, introduce new technologies, and oversee contractors and engineering firms.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and manage minor/major equipment outages.
  • Lead the design, selection, and installation of major equipment and systems.
  • Provide system and equipment technical expertise within predictive and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Review and monitor annual mechanical inspections at facilities.
  • Support generation projects with drawings, specifications, design calculations, and analysis.
  • Provide technical expertise in the development and execution of capital projects.
  • Oversee external contractors, including engineering, construction, and maintenance firms.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology (BSME preferred).
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in commercial electric power generation.
  • At least 5 years of preventive and predictive maintenance experience in an operating facility.
  • Strong technical and business knowledge of power plant operation, performance, and economics.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proven expertise in the design, analysis, and maintenance of hydroelectric or turbine-based systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Familiarity with hydroelectric systems (penstock, wicket gates, inlet valves, runners, spiral case).
  • Knowledge of industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Level II Vibration Analyst certification a plus.
