Come work alongside technology visionaries and research scientists to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world.
  • The Cameras Architecture Team is looking for an Optical Modeling Engineer to develop and validate optical models for an end-to-end camera simulation pipeline that consists of image sensor, optics, and imaging algorithms.
  • Your work will drive the study and validation of new camera technologies and architectures for products across different categories from Smart Glasses, AR to MR.  If you are excited about learning first principles and applying your skills in bridging the gap between theoretical models and real-world performance and pushing the envelope of simulation technologies, please come have a chat with us.
Must-Have HARD Skills:
  • Optical design experience
  • Experience using design software like Zemax and Code V
  • Python/MATLAB programming, shell scripting skills
Nice-to-have Skills:
  • Experiences in camera calibration and modeling of imaging systems
  • Hands on experience in the development of lab setups for camera system performance study
  • Image quality evaluation metrics like MTF/SNR
Years of Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience
Degrees/Certifications Required:
  • Bachelors required, Master or PhD preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and validate optical models as part of an imaging simulation pipeline to enable novel camera HW explorations, data generation, and product architecture validation.
  • Partner with the internal optics and camera team to understand modeling requirements and to improve fidelity and efficiency.
  • Liaison with software partners like Synopsis and Ansys to understand their implementations, limitations and find out solutions.
  • Collaborate with developers of other pipeline components such as graphics renderer and sensor model to understand different implementation trade-offs and optimize for overall performance.
  • Experiment and data collection to validate modeling accuracy
  • Investigate latest imaging modeling technologies to enable realistic simulation of real camera behaviors
  • Research and develop novel calibration and metrology technologies.
Qualifications:
  • Imaging optics design and optimization experience
  • This position requires hands-on development on programmatically modeling complex lens behaviors. Scripting experience with programming languages like Python or MATLAB is a must.
  • Expertise on using software like Code V or Zemax for lens design or ray tracing.  Preferably with knowledge on how ray tracing is implemented in these softwares.
  • Knowledge of image formation process (spectrum, optics/aberrations, PSF, sensor noise, Fourier theory, sampling/aliasing) needed to successfully model and simulate complex imaging phenomena.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction and manage a project independently from start to finish.
Good to have:
  • Experience developing and implementing optics design and ray tracing software like Code V and Zemax.
  • Experience in modeling of imaging systems, calibration and metrology
  • Experience in image quality testing of camera systems and familiar with image quality metrics and analysis (MTF/SNR).
  • Familiar with image sensor and image processing algorithms
Key Projects/Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Work with other optical and simulation engineers on developing and validating optical models as part of an imaging simulation pipeline.
  • Liaison with software partners like Synopsis and Ansys to understand their implementations, limitations and find out solutions.
Purpose/Size of this team & where does this position fit within the team:
  • A small team working on developing an end-to-end high fidelity, high accuracy, and photo reality camera simulator.  This position will be the key person to develop and improve optical models.
Why is this position open:
  • Need for new feature development
How will performance be measured:
  • Ability to work independently and deliver results on time.
  • Ability to understand complex issues and provide analysis, recommendation, and solutions.
  • Ability to present ideas, communicate and collaborate with cross functional teams.
What makes this role interesting:
  • Opportunity to understand, validate and influence the whole camera system architecture.
  • Working on a very important sub-system of the latest and greatest AR/VR products.
  • Opportunity to gain broad system level knowledge but also deep dive into certain areas.
  • Opportunity to develop and incorporate new technology into the system.
