Packaging Engineer – Industrial Sector
Location: Massachusetts North ReadingDuration: 12 Months
We are seeking an experienced Packaging Engineer with a background in the industrial sector to join our Process Engineering Pkg team. This role will focus on the development, optimization, and commercialization of new, improved, and cost-efficient packaging solutions while supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) projects and maintaining existing General Availability (GA) packaging systems. The ideal candidate will have expertise in packaging materials, SolidWorks design, and logistics principles to drive innovation and efficiency.
This position reports directly to the Lead Packaging Engineer and requires cross-functional collaboration with suppliers, logistics, and process engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Packaging Development & Optimization

Manage the development of packaging concepts in collaboration with preferred packaging vendors and component suppliers.

Design and develop packaging solutions based on engineering drawings, product specifications, and handling requirements.

Create sketches, specifications, and prototypes for approval from cross-functional teams.

Conduct root cause analysis and implement countermeasures for packaging-related field quality defects.
Testing & Compliance

Coordinate packaging performance testing, qualifications, and validations per ISTA and ASTM standards.

Ensure compliance with safety and transportation regulations.
Logistics & Sustainability

Optimize trailer loading configurations to maximize cubing efficiency for logistics partners.

Maintain knowledge of palletizing and trailer loading software (e.g., TOPS, CAPE, EasyCargo).

Utilize Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) calculation methods and sustainability impact tools such as Compass (Trayak).
Data Management & Documentation

Maintain packaging-specific part numbers in the PLM system.

Collect and manage Packaging Data Sheets (PDS) from part suppliers.

Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) for packaging processes.

Create and manage a Supplier Packaging Database.
Required Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or a related field

3-5+ years of relevant work experience

Knowledge of packaging base materials and systems

Strong SolidWorks and AutoCAD design experience

Ability to review, write, and implement packaging SOPs and WIs

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Preferred Skills

Understanding of transportation and logistics principles

Experience with palletizing and trailer loading software (e.g., TOPS, CAPE, EasyCargo)
